Paulusma is Jelle Paulusma, the singer/guitarist of Dutch indie pride Daryll-Ann. Since the break with the group in 2004, Paulusma has released three solo albums. Now there is number four: Pulling Weeds. After having been on the shelf for a while because of the reunion tour of his old band, Excelsior Recordings presents Paulusma's latest record on November 14, 2014.
More venomous, and more disturbing. "The album title, and a large part of the songs on this record, were inspired by the cover photo. Two innocent children looking at the world in disbelief. They symbolize the future, while the prospects are far from favorable. That photo immediately conjured up all kinds of images for me, so I started working with it. Those two kids also pop up every now and then, in Stick Around With You for example. As outcasts. Or in Winterlong, as lovers... and a few more, yes."
Whatever the meaning of his songs may be: Paulusma, regardless of trends, continues to build an oeuvre in which the spirit of the creator is unmistakably present. Whether it is melancholic acoustic or compelling electric, he tirelessly roams along the boundaries of his dreamed sonic landscape.
Paulusma wrote Pulling Weeds in Amsterdam and recorded the album largely in his own studio. For recordings of drums, piano and cello he moved to the IJland Studio. He took care of most of the instruments himself, assisted by brother Coen on percussion, Theo Sieben on various string instruments, Elmar Klijn on piano and Rob Klerkx on drums.
