The Netherlands' best-known Nederbiet band The Kik will release its second long player on 25 April, simply titled 2. It is an album full of surprises. In contrast to the previous record, the band is almost entirely responsible for both the music and the lyrics. A diverse album that shows an almost reborn The Kik. You can still hear influences from the beetroot, the sixties, The Beatles and The Kinks, but on 2 The Kik has more of an ear for golden melodies and witty lyrics than before. Which are not only provided by guitars and vocals, but also by wind instruments, strings and even a barrel organ. The Kik in 2014 is more musical and varied than ever.
2 is the successor to Springlevend, released in 2012, which included the hit Simone. The past two years, the band toured clubs and festivals, including Lowlands and Parkpop. In early January, The Kik accompanied their musical hero Boudewijn de Groot at a one-off tribute concert during Noorderslag in Groningen, with the cooperation of Tim Knol, Janne Schra and The New Cool Collective, among others.
Frontman Dave von Raven about the album: “The recording process was an intense period, never before have we worked on an album for so long in between other things. This is also the first time that we have really made an album as a band.” Singer/guitarist Arjan Spies adds: “This is without a doubt the best thing I have ever made.” Producer Frans Hagenaars: “I think this album is really going to surprise. Every time we play a song now, I am also amazed by what can be heard.” Dave von Raven: “The past two years can be heard on this album. We have experienced so much, played so much, done so much. In terms of lyrics, for example, we are now clearly reaping the benefits of our De Wereld Draait Door adventure. Since that challenge, I have become even more aware of what is possible with the Dutch language and I think we have made a big step there too. We are incredibly happy with it and super proud of it, I mean that seriously.”
