The Union Square subway station has to be one of the best places to experience the melting pot that New York City continues to be.
Beyond the gates, a young teenager plays Bach on a cheap digital piano. Nearby, cheered on by a frenzied crowd, Bronx B-boys defy gravity to pumping breakbeats blaring from a boombox. Down on one of the platforms, a man drums furiously on plastic buckets. A battered metal trash can serves as a hi-hat.
A punk with a baritone saxophone fires off roaring acid riffs at bystanders from one of the pedestrian tunnels. A lament played on an oriental string instrument resounds intoxicatingly down a staircase on the other side of the entrance hall. All this is accompanied by frequent, shrill announcements and the thunder and rattle of metro trains.
I notice that I can influence the balance and character of the different sound sources by moving myself across the platform. Gradually this cacophony in my head merges into one big city symphony performed by musicians from all corners and layers of the city.

I am touched, because I see 'my essence' reflected. Like a Metropolis, I am a crossroads of cultures. Because of my varied background, it has become second nature to me to bring apparent contradictions into harmony.
