Sam & Julia
Sam & Julia - Something Somewhere (May 21, 2021, I Love My Label)
Something Somewhere was born - very romantically - in an attic room in Amsterdam, in the long, hot summer of 2020. With a pile of tragicomic stories, a guitar and two voices that seem made for each other, they started to forge songs from memories. From Sam's panic attack in Prague Zoo to Julia's countless boring dates. Something Somewhere is a narrative record par excellence. Sam & Julia, strengthened by their band, show a new sound. Americana on the edge of indie rock. Somewhere between the sobriety of Wilco and the melancholy of Phoebe Bridgers.
Sam (23) & Julia (26) met five years ago. With their striking voices and idiosyncratic songs, they complement each other perfectly. The first EP, So Far, So Good (2019), was released on Tim Knol's I Love My Label and put Sam & Julia on the map.
Julia: “Actually, making this record made us both go to therapy. Especially with the songs that are so personal and quiet, I found it confronting to sing them. I suddenly didn’t like the sound of my own voice anymore and I started to think about every note. Eventually we found a way together to get the good feeling back and I am now very happy with how everything is on it. I have learned that sometimes it is necessary to fall flat on your face and then get up again with new insights.”
Something Somewhere is definitely not just anything, just anywhere. The album is a benchmark in the lives of Sam & Julia. A candid coming of age story of a duo, that matures both musically and lyrically through trial and error.
