Speed 78 - Goom Agar
Speed 78 is the group formed around guitarist, singer, qualified philosopher and songwriter Don van Dongen. It is a professional folk pop record with a melancholic undertone - or as Don van Dongen himself says: “On Goom Agar there are songs with a beginning and an end, sometimes melancholic, sometimes exuberant, with a small line-up, often half-electric and about half of the songs are instrumental. Own material, with the occasional traditional in between. But what are we going to call that… Just tell us: indie folk? roots? psychedelic folk? pop? As a musician you hope that people don't worry so much about labels. With our first record we weren't so concerned with connecting to a certain style either. We called it 'skiffle' because we liked a direct, unaffected sound.” Don van Dongen recorded 'Goom Agar' with Anne Soldaat and together they play almost all the instruments on the record; sometimes assisted by Cor van Ingen (Spinvis) on bass, Arnold Lasseur (Bluegrass Boogiemen) on mandolin and Renée Wijnhoven (Clean Pete) on cello and vocals.
