Chris Doyle - For Afie
The birth of a child is, if you believe your parents, one of the most special moments in a person’s life. But it can lead to other things too. Take Chris Doyle’s new album, For Afie, which came about because Doyle spent hours improvising on the piano at home during his wife Linn’s labor to help her through the physical ordeal.
'For Afie' is improvised solo piano music. It is a meditative listening experience on the border of classical, jazz and folk music from different parts of the world. Improvisation is the core of the music and Doyle's passion for different styles and instruments resonates in everything he plays. In his musical choices, influences can be heard from Emahoy Tsegue-Maryam Guebrou, Bill Evans and Erik Satie, among others - sometimes even in one composition.
Chris Doyle is an American pianist and multi-instrumentalist. He is an improviser and composer; raised on rock 'n' roll, trained in jazz and a lover of classical, soul, afrobeat and countless other genres. Doyle operates on a broad spectrum of musical interests and his work reflects influences, techniques and elements of music from all over the world. One day he is soldering together a new art installation with his collective Touki Delphine, the next he is on tour in the Kurdish mountains of Turkey with singer Meral Polat and drummer Frank Rosaly, and the next he is improvising on his piano at home for his beloved while she gives birth to their child.
