Couperus in transit: A musical ode to Louis Couperus
Songs inspired by Couperus' travel stories on album and one-off concert in Diligentia The Hague.
Louis Couperus (1863-1923), one of the most important writers in the canon of Dutch literature, is still world famous for novels such as Eline Vere and Van oude mensen de dingen die voorbijgaan, but in his serials and travel stories he reported on his encounters and experiences abroad. With an open mind he described people, locations and local customs, from Italy to Japan.
At the invitation of the Louis Couperus Society, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, musicians and writers will perform songs inspired by Couperus' travel stories. The result will be presented on Sunday 15 April under the title 'Couperus in transit' in the Diligentia theatre in The Hague. The album of the same name will also be presented then, with contributions by Clean Pete, Yorick van Norden, Dave von Raven, Lea Kliphuis & Hanneke Hendrix, Esther de Jong, Massih Hutak & Janne Schra, Maurits Westerik and Spinvis. The writers and musicians (with the exception of Maurits Westerik and Spinvis) will present their songs to the audience this evening, as on the album, supported by Arjan Spies and Paul Zoontjens (De Bleeke Jongelingen). Actor Arend Brandligt will perform Couperus' accompanying lyrics for each song.
The songs each describe a different country, based on the travel stories of Couperus. For example, Lea Kliphuis comes with an adaptation of the Japanese fairy tale The White Fox. Maurits Westerik of Bewilder sings about the travels through the Indies in All Things Related, Esther de Jong makes her debut with Nutteloze Toeschouwer after the 'Letters from the Nutteloozen spectator' from Germany.

The Louis Couperus Society was founded in 1993 to bring together lovers of the work of Louis Couperus and to stimulate scientific research into the life and oeuvre of the author. The Society organizes lectures, performances and other activities each year, in which the life and work of Couperus are central.
The project management and direction is in the hands of Gérard van Kalmthout. The album Couperus in Transit was recorded by Frans Hagenaars in SSE Noord Amsterdam and will be released on May 11th on Excelsior Recordings.
