Someone has to do it, release music on cassette. Psych popper Hugo van de Poel likes to do it: the EP Ocean Tears by his band Earth Mk. II is released by Excelsior Recordings in a limited edition on compact cassette. According to Van de Poel, the music cassette is the ultimate way to experience the songs. "Cassettes and tape recorders, actually anything with tape, are the ultimate carriers for lo-fi music. I think it's a shame that they've kind of disappeared in the Netherlands, because in my opinion music from a cassette often sounds better. The tape provides extra compression and a grittier overall picture. With a lot of the music I like to listen to, this is just that extra layer you're looking for."
Ocean Tears showcases a new sound of Earth Mk. II. The uptempo psych pop of their debut album Music for Mammals makes way for rippling lo-fi acid folk. The instrumentation is reduced to a minimum so as not to deny that this EP was simply recorded in the living room. For the new work, Van de Poel sought a collaboration with sound artist Mark IJzerman, who created a trippy echo design for songs. Together they also took on the production of the EP.
Ocean Tears will be released in a limited numbered edition of 100 pieces.
