What Lovers Do by Gerhardt is a disturbingly candid album about the rough edges of love, sex, honest mistakes, heartache and everyday triviality in the fifties. At a flea market in Groningen, Gerhardt (Beans & Fatback/ Het Pauperparadijs) finds old Revox tapes with spoken diaries. On the tapes, a man can be heard looking back on his life as a thirty-something in the fifties. Gerhardt is intrigued and inspired by the man's stories and makes the album What Lovers Do. The songs and lyrics are modern without ignoring Gerhardt's old heroes; Eartha Kitt, Hoagy Carmichael, Patsy Cline, Buddy Holly, Frank Sinatra and writers such as Raymond Chandler, Micke Spillane, can be heard in everything.
