Gijsbert Hanekroot & Gijsbert Kamer - Neil Young by Hanekroot
Perhaps the most iconic image of Neil Young is the photo that graces the cover of Tonight's the Night.
Dutch photographer Gijsbert Hanekroot took the photo in 1973 at London's Rainbow Theatre.
These were the heydays of Neil Young and Hanekroot was one of the few photographers who was in the vicinity of the artist several times for Muziekkrant OOR.
'Of the 300-plus artists I photographed in the 1970s, a few are particularly important to me, not only because I enjoy listening to their music, but also because I had the opportunity to photograph them frequently. Neil Young is in my top three. This is also an important book for me', says Hanekroot.
Neil Young By Hanekroot brings together for the first time the unique images of the artist and his entourage. Hanekroot's namesake Gijsbert Kamer wrote an essay for the photo book.
Kamer states: 'Gijsbert Hanekroot was perhaps the most important pop photographer in the Netherlands in the seventies. All the major international pop stars came in front of his camera. He followed many of them at home and abroad. Neil Young occupies a prominent place in his oeuvre, which is reflected in Neil Young By Hanekroot. An impressive photo book that covers the years 1971-1976. Perhaps the most crucial phase in Young's career. It was the time in which the Canadian pop star personally went through the deepest valleys but also enjoyed his greatest successes. Hanekroot was there when Young played in American stadiums with Crosby, Stills & Nash, and in 1973 he took the photo in London that would eventually become the cover of perhaps Young's most moving album Tonight's The Night (1975).'
