King Champion Sounds - For A Lark

King Champion's new album Sounds For A Lark (the title is taken from a poem by Ivor Cutler) is a mesmerizing and glorious album. It shows that King Champion Sounds have once again managed to produce a very urgent and imaginative record. Ten tracks that are full of psychedelic krautrock, dub, free jazz, free folk and electronica. Guests on the new album are Steve Gunn, Imaad Wasif (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and BJ Nilsen.

The brain behind King Champion Sounds is the Krommenie -based, Kenyan-born Brit Ajay Saggar. Saggar has an enormous track record in the music world. He makes music with Deutsche Ashram, The Common Cold and played in bands such as Dandelion Adventure, Donkey and The Bent Moustache. John Peel was a fan. He also worked as a sound engineer behind the buttons for greats such as My Bloody Valentine, Dinosaur Jr., Mogwai and others. Saggar is accompanied in King Champion Sounds by former The Ex frontman GW Sok (vox), Oli Heffernan (bass), Mees Siderius (drums), Ditmer Weetman (sax), Chris Moerland (trombone), Elsa van der Linden (sax), Merinde Verbeek (vox + synth).

The well-known British writer and comedian Stewart Lee recently told The Sunday Times: “What if The Fall had garnished their rockabilly grooves with swing-era horns? What if Can played Ghanaian highlife? What if Morricone had scored spaghetti westerns in a Moroccan souk? King Champion Sounds recombine canonical influences in new contexts" .
