Maria Iscariot - EN/EN 10" white vinyl
The EP is called EN/EN after the greedy, cheerful, yet not painless, counterpart of Kierkegaard's Either/Or (and Elioth Smith's translation thereof). The cover is a collaboration with painter Yves Decamp who has made a teasing translation of that duality: the child's mouth and the violence of desire. Ian Clement (Wallace Vanborn / Donderling Audio) did the production and the mix and the record is an amalgam of Nerdpop and jolly punkrock. Influences from Pixies, Nena with her 99 airballons, Gorki and the rawer work of The Stooges.
ABOUT MARY ISCARIOT
Maria Iscariot is the patron saint of questionable behavior. It is half-grown female punk rock from Ghent. Hopeful hopelessness in noisy verse, chorus, verse. Love for the unloved, figs after Easter, but first and foremost a genuflection for sinners.
As befits a band on Burning Fik (Hang Youth, Gotu Jim) label, Maria Iscariot attempts to find a shred of hope in seemingly all-encompassing hopelessness. Their efforts are mercilessly repelled. In 2023, they joined Hang Youth on tour via an Instagram DM and were crowned SoundTrack laureate.
The band is a combination of forest witches, punks and sweet sirens. Helena Cazaerck writes, sings and plays guitar, Loeke Vanhoutteghem plays second guitar, Sybe Versluys drums and Amanda Barbosa bass.
