Pianist Matteo Myderwyk releases new album 'Ataraxia'

Matteo Myderwyk presents his third piano album in 18 months on Excelsior Recordings on January 11: Ataraxia.

After To Move and Verses, Ataraxia will be released on January 11. The new album contains 13 songs and finds its origins in the ancient philosophy of Epicurus (431 – 270 BC) who tried to teach his students complete peace of mind; ataraxia. According to Epicurus, ataraxia is the first step to true happiness, with music being the most important tool to find peace of mind.
Where improvisation takes centre stage on the debut album To Move (2017) and harmonic developments take the lead on the successor Verses (2018), Matteo chooses melody as the main player on Ataraxia.
Again, all tracks are untitled and are categorized into Axioms. In philosophical logic, a thesis (axiom means thesis) is seen as an unproven statement that needs to be substantiated. In addition, it may not contradict other thesis. When compiling the album, Matteo selected tracks that cannot be confused with each other, in order to present a very diverse range of melodies.
The album was recorded in two days, just like To Move and Verses. This time in Muziekgebouw Eindhoven, August 2018. With Ataraxia, Matteo concludes his three-part series of piano albums at Excelsior.
