Meindert Talma - The Domela Passion
On November 18, 2019, it will be exactly one hundred years since the founder of Dutch socialism Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis (1846-1919) passed away. To commemorate his person and his struggle and to celebrate his ideas, 2019 has been declared the official Domela year. As a born and raised Frisian in the village of Surhuisterveen, Talma knows the stories about Domela like no other. Meindert wrote a thesis about Domela's impoverished roots in high school. Reason enough for cult hero Meindert Talma to base his new album on the life of this both beloved and hated figure. He previously made musical life stories about draughts player Jannes van der Wal and artist HN Werkman, among others. Talma pulled out all the stops for his Domela album - he recorded it with his full band, including choir and string ensemble. The Domela Passion contains 16 songs and is published as a 44-page book containing all the lyrics, lots of images and a CD in the back.
