"What would happen if we took Gospel apart?" That was the question Onno Smit and Paul Willemsen asked themselves. Not to detract from the genre, but to try to avoid all clichés. How many songs would be left? Onno and Paul, seasoned with their bands like Beans & Fatback and Lefties Soul Connection, found in Michelle David the singer for their search for the cradle of soul.

American Michelle David, born in North Carolina and raised in New York, sang in church from the age of four and a year later with her first gospel group, The Mission of Love. But Michelle was not immediately enthusiastic about The Gospel Sessions. She wanted to distance herself from the Gospel and leave it to those who were eager to save souls.

After some insistence and a few trial sessions, the concept for the record became clearer to her and she agreed to make this record. Back to the origin and essence of why this music is so attractive, but with a new approach. Throw away what is superfluous and see what remains. So no Hammond organ where you would expect it, no choir where you do hear it and limit the handclaps to a minimum. Away with the many chords; One guitar riff often says more than a whole series of chord changes. The power lies in the repetition.

Except for two songs, The Gospel Sessions Vol.1 is a bass guitar-less record. The emphasis is on the groove of the guitars and the rudimentary percussion rhythms of Toon Oomen. In this style, the record takes you from the Caribbean (There's A Light) to New Orleans (I want To Know), on to Mali in West Africa (Made It Over) and to the Mississippi Delta Blues (Can't no Grave).

The Gospel Sessions Vol.1 was recorded and recorded live in one day at The Electric Monkey studios in Amsterdam with Kasper Frenkel behind the controls.
