The Elfstedentocht is too uncertain. A new James Bond too certain. Moss is more like that traveling uncle. You never know when he will come by, but when he does, everyone immediately hangs on his every word. The first thing you notice when listening to Moss' new songs is the tranquility of the whole. This is not a thrown-together occasional album. This is a band that delivers a life's work. A band that has found each other again in the studio after years. And what a studio! The album title HX refers to Hoogcruts, the name of a centuries-old monastery in South Limburg that has known many devastating fires, but has risen just as often. "Metaphor!" Il Postino would now shout. Moss is back.

It has become an album about loss, setbacks, farewells, but ultimately also acceptance. As a result, the music seems to rest more on the mind than to oppress it. It is safe to look back when a song like Salt is on. But the best songs transcend their theme, they start to lead a life of their own. Around is such a song. It has the characteristic upbeat indie grooves of Dutch pop classics like My Decision , but would not have been out of place on In Rainbows either. While a song like Beginning could have been sampled by Drake. And then we haven't even mentioned the born single Before It's Gone ! Arne van Petegem is the producer, just like on Strike , and Bob Gibson is the guitarist again after eight years. "I Need You Here" sings Marien on the yearning Save Me . Is he talking about his band? About his mother? About us? Melancholy is your friend for a moment and not your enemy when HX van Moss comes on. A very welcome side effect of a beautiful album in a complicated time.

Moss was founded in 2003 and has been playing in the indie premier league from day one. The band does this with rock-solid songs and a versatile sound that is highly appreciated by both fans and critics. From indie rock to psychedelica. Modern and timeless at the same time. Moss brings a unique sound to the table and knows how to renew and improve itself time and again. With every album the band releases, Moss reveals itself time and again as a reborn, course-setting act. The warm, charming pop of the debut The Long Way Back (2007), the passionate breakthrough Never Be Scared / Don't Be A Hero (2009), the oppressive, electronic-tinged Ornaments (2012), the shadowy, krautrock-oriented fourth long player We Both Know The Rest Is Noise (2014), the sober, elemental splendor of Strike (2017) and the international sound of HX (2022).
