Tangarine - Because of You
Same looks, identical lives, inseparable vocal cords. That's how it was. Until last year. 'Because of You' is the soundtrack to the disordered brotherhood of Sander and Arnout Brinks.
Life has driven them apart: the twin brothers Sander and Arnout Brinks of the music duo Tangarine. They still share the same tour bus and they still stand side by side on stage every night, but their life paths have diverged. In 2017, one held his first child in his arms, while at the same time the other's marriage broke up. It is the first time in their existence as identical twins that their lives no longer run parallel.
This bitter brotherhood resonates on their self-produced new album Because of You . Just like for their previous album There and Back , they went to the WaveLab studio in the city of Tucson, Arizona (Calexico, Iron and Wine, Jayhawks) for the recordings. Why? “The best-sounding albums from our record collection were recorded here.” According to the brothers. There in the desert area they underwent a musical metamorphosis: Tangarine is no longer a pristine folk band. Their music has become more whimsical and compelling.
“Now I'm a memory in your head. I'm a moment of the past. A thought you can't make sense of anymore” (from the song Echoes )
“Then I looked into the distance, and I realized the past will vanish in the rearview mirror” (from the song Lemonade Sky )
The typical blood harmony in their twin vocals has remained, but this time the guitars demand more speaking time. In the middle of the familiar sounding Tangarine songs, side roads are taken. The harmony is torn open by sharp guitar parts and wandering digressions over musically rocky terrain. This is the soundtrack of their disordered brotherhood.
Tangarine's latest album is the successor to the critically acclaimed album There and Back (2016), Move On (2014) and their breakthrough album Seek & Sigh (2013). The band consists of Rolf Verbaant (guitar/pedal steel), David Corel (bass) and Robin Buijs (drums).
