It's been 5 years since zZz's last album. But Bjorn Ottenheim and Daan Schinkel are back with Juggernaut. An album with more Kraut influences and more space than before, but still unmistakably zZz (pronounced: Jazz, without the Ja).
The band made an impression in 2005 with their debut Sound of zZz. First single Ecstasy was widely used in international games, films and series (from GTA to Phileine Zegt Sorry and CSI), the album was released worldwide and the band toured from America to Russia and Japan at festivals such as Benicassim and Glastonbury. With the successor Running With The Beast the train continued unabated. From a five-star review in the Volkskrant, four stars in the British Mojo to album of the year in the Russian Rolling Stone.
The tandem drum and organ setup has been the same for 10 years, but the sound has definitely evolved. Earlier comparisons with a trippy version of The Doors have given way to Krautrock-oriented jams with influences from Neu!, Can and Kraftwerk. Jam sessions have been reduced to four-minute tracks or to the 20-minute Kraut epic of title track Juggernaut.
